"Mississippi River Barge" by Allison Newhouse
July 30, 2008
Allison’s work began with the idea of depicting the struggling co-existence of nature and industry. As she worked through the design process, trying to transform concept to art, she struggled herself. And then she thought of something she’s loved her entire life—boats. As a child Allison loved watching boats and barges. As she thought about it more, she realized that a barge was a simple expression of the incredible strength and importance of the river and its work. Jeff Canham is one of the artists Allison studied as she created her piece. She hopes that her print generates the kind of simple, optimistic feeling she gets from his art.
